How to use this tool

  1. Upload any image (JPG, PNG, WebP, SVG) or paste directly from your clipboard using Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.

  2. Select an iconic preset such as Spotify Wave, Cyberpunk Neon, Sunset Amber, Deep Ocean, or Analog Monolith.

  3. Customize Shadow and Highlight colors using the hex inputs or native color pickers, or click Swap (↔) to invert tone directions.

  4. Enable optional Tritone Mode to introduce an independent 3-point midtone color anchor.

  5. Fine-tune the Contrast / Intensity slider (-50 to +50) to enhance shadow depth or highlight punchiness.

  6. Drag the interactive Before / After split comparison slider to inspect the gradient map against the original photo.

  7. Download your full-resolution duotone image as lossless PNG or high-quality JPEG.

The tool converts your image pixels to perceptual Rec. 709 luminance (0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B) and maps those tonal brightness values into a color ramp between shadow and highlight targets. Processing executes entirely inside your browser's local memory using HTML5 Canvas typed arrays (Uint8ClampedArray) with zero network requests to remote servers.
Duotone maps image tones across two color endpoints: shadows and highlights. Tritone introduces a third color anchor specifically for midtones (at 50% luminance), allowing complex cinematic color gradations such as teal shadows, golden midtones, and magenta highlights.
Standard digital screens perceive green light much brighter than blue or red. ITU-R Recommendation BT.709 mathematically accounts for human eye cone sensitivity by weighting Green at 71.52%, Red at 21.26%, and Blue at 7.22%. This ensures natural contrast without muddy skin tones or blown-out highlights.
Yes. Clicking the Swap Colors button (↔) instantly reverses the gradient map direction, creating high-contrast surreal negative duotone effects.
Never. Exporting processes your photo at 100% of its native pixel dimensions (img.naturalWidth × img.naturalHeight) directly from source image memory, preserving all sharpness and detail.
PNG provides pixel-perfect lossless compression, making it ideal for sharp graphic designs, album art, and typography overlays. JPEG (92% quality) offers much smaller file sizes with indistinguishable perceptual differences for social media and web publishing.
