How to use this tool

  1. Upload any image (JPG, PNG, WebP) or paste directly from your clipboard with Ctrl+V.

  2. Adjust the Pixel Block Size slider (2px to 80px) to dial in your desired retro resolution.

  3. Choose a Color Quantization preset: True Color (24-bit), Retro Arcade (16 colors), Game Boy Classic (4 shades), or Cyborg Neon (8 colors).

  4. Optionally enable the Pixel Grid toggle for an authentic sprite sheet aesthetic.

  5. Drag the interactive Before / After slider across the canvas to compare the pixel art conversion against the original photo.

  6. Download your full-resolution pixelated artwork as lossless PNG (recommended) or JPEG.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about file privacy, processing modes, formats, and device support.

The tool resamples your photo onto a downscaled HTML5 Canvas, applies nearest-neighbor interpolation (imageSmoothingEnabled = false), and runs fast color quantization in local memory. All processing occurs on your device with zero server uploads.
Standard image scaling algorithms (such as bilinear or bicubic filtering) blur the boundaries between adjacent pixels to create smooth gradients. Nearest-neighbor interpolation preserves razor-sharp, blocky rectangular pixel edges essential for authentic retro pixel art.
True Color retains full 24-bit photographic colors. Retro Arcade quantizes to a classic 16-color 8-bit palette. Game Boy Classic remaps luminance into the authentic 1989 DMG-01 olive-green 4-shade scale. Cyborg Neon remaps tones into a high-contrast electric cyberpunk palette.
Yes! Pixelation is a classic censorship method. However, for complete irreversible privacy redaction (such as hiding credit cards or license plates), our Blur & Privacy Masker tool is also available in the Image tools category.
PNG uses lossless compression, which perfectly preserves sharp pixel boundaries and solid color blocks without introducing fuzzy compression artifacts or mosquito noise common in JPEGs.
