How to use this tool

  1. Upload your image (JPG, PNG, WebP, SVG) or paste directly from your clipboard using Ctrl+V / Cmd+V.

  2. Choose a curated cinematic preset (such as Teal & Orange, Cinematic Noir, Golden Hour, or Cyberpunk Dusk) or customize shadow and highlight colors manually.

  3. Adjust Shadow Color & Saturation to inject rich chromatic depth into darker luminance zones.

  4. Adjust Highlight Color & Saturation to wash warm or contrasting tints across bright luminance zones.

  5. Shift the Balance Slider to move the tonal threshold and control how deeply shadows or highlights dominate midtones.

  6. Drag the Before / After comparison slider across the canvas preview or use the quick 100% Original, 50/50 Split, and 100% Graded buttons to evaluate your color grade.

  7. Optionally fine-tune overall Strength, Saturation, Contrast, or enable Black & White Base for darkroom-style split prints.

  8. Export your graded image at full native source resolution as lossless PNG or high-quality JPEG.

Split toning is a legendary photographic and cinematic color grading technique where shadow tones and highlight tones are tinted with two contrasting hues. Hollywood blockbusters famously use teal in the shadows and warm golden orange in the highlights to create dramatic visual contrast, depth, and skin-tone separation without losing underlying exposure details.
Elixuvo's split toning engine processes your image 100% client-side on an HTML5 Canvas. For every pixel, it calculates perceptual Rec. 709 luminance (0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B) to separate dark shadow regions from bright highlight regions. Custom tonal transfer functions and balance weighting apply chromatic tinting while strictly preserving natural luminance and contrast.
The Balance slider shifts the midpoint luminance threshold between shadows and highlights. Shifting balance towards shadows allows shadow tinting to reach further up into midtones, while shifting towards highlights allows highlight tinting to descend into midtones.
Duotone replaces all colors in an image with a strict gradient between two inks, erasing natural color variations. Split toning, on the other hand, preserves the image's original full-color information, textures, and details, selectively infusing complementary color casts into the shadows and highlights for a cinematic grade.
Yes. While the canvas preview is optimized for smooth, responsive editing, export processing executes directly on the native source pixel grid, saving your final image at original dimensions without downsampling or quality degradation.
Never. All pixel analysis, color math, and export rendering happen entirely inside your browser's local memory using HTML5 Canvas typed arrays. Zero image data is transmitted across the network.
